The ESO/OHP Summer School offers young astronomers the opportunity to gain practical observing experience under realistic conditions. Participants will work in groups of three and will be guided by an experienced observer in the use of the instrumentation of OHP. Each group will carry out a small observing programme on the telescopes of 0.8-1.9m aperture, all equipped with a CCD detector (direct imaging and spectroscopy), and reduce the data with MIDAS or IRAF. The results will be related to relevant additional information from the astronomical literature, and presented in a brief summary to the other participants at the end of the school.

The preparation of the practical work will be supplemented by a series of 90-minute lectures which will be given by invited specialists. Foreseen subjects include:
