Royal d'Uccle, Belgique). Il est également utilisé lors de
stages de DEA.
This telescope was built and operated jointly with Liège University (Belgium). It was commisioned in 1970 and refurbished in 1974. The primary mirror (diameter 87cm, thickness 9cm) was cast by the St.Gobain Glassworks and the corrector plate (diameter 62cm, thickness 2.3cm) is made out of BK7 Schott glass. 16x16cm plates or film (only 15x15cm are useable) are loaded automatically from the outside of the main tube. The field of view is 4.1° with a plate scale of 98.8"/mm. A 26cm guide scope of 4.22m focal length is used with an X-Y slide for programmable guiding on comets.
This telescope has been used with an Objective Prism by Charles Fehrenbach's group for the determination of radial velocities.
The Schmidt telescope is still used from time to time for imaging of comets and in searches for asteroids, notably by Eric W. Elst (Royal Observatory, Uccle, Belgium). It is also used in teaching activities.
